guilty displeasures?

Are there bands or artists you dare not admit you don't care for because it seems as if everyone else but you liked them? I would think some people feel that way about the Beatles or Elvis. For me, I was just never into Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston or a lot of Eighties pop or rock. Even if the music was high-quality and the artists involved were really good at what they did and not just slickly marketted, it just didn't do a thing for me at all. Fandom is something I'll never understand overall, but it's especially true when it comes to artists whose music I did not find very interesting. So yeah, does anybody else feel the way I do and do you have your own guilty displeasures you're willing to admit to?

Sounds like you're aiming more at the kids, since as adults who cares what one likes or doesn't. But yes as a teen I didn't care for most pop or any of that, was mainly into metal and more esoteric stuff like the industrial, and later on, Jazz and Blues.
Now, I do sometimes listen to some 80s pop just because it sort of reminds me of times then, some things we did, stuff like that. More of a sound track sort of thing I guess.

Seems as though everyone nowadays likes Lady gaga, Taylor Swift, Justin Beber, and Miley Sirus or however you spell her name. I'm sure they are great people but I can't stand their music.

One of my sisters once told me, "Even though you don't like country, you _have to like Taylor Swift." I hate ALL country, including Taylor Swift, even though she's more pop than country. I also can't stand Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson. There are a lot of other, newer, artists and bands I don't like, but I'm not sure whether they would fall under the category of guilty displeasures.

I guess I don't fully understand this concept. If someone doesn't like an artist, why not just come out and say so, even if others disagree? Everyone has their own taste. I could never stand Michael Jackson, even when everyone thought he was great. Maybe it's just because I'm an opinionated person, and don't mind going against the grain when it comes to things like this. I'm liable to at least check out some artist who is all the rage, so I can make my own impressions rather than just going by the word of others, but have no problem expressing my likes or dislikes once I've made my own opinions.

I've never been shy about saying I don't like Michael Jackson. I also readily admit to not liking Taylor Swift even though I am a fan of a lot of country music. I think she writes good songs that I'm sure a lot of kids between the ages of 12 and 20 can identify with because the lyrics are generally about boyfriend/girfriend relationships. But as far as actual singing goes, the girl just simply is not a good singer. Same with Mili Syrus. If her dad weren't in the business, she never would have been given a recording contract. There are lots of others, but I really don't care who knows whether or not I like or dislike popular artists. I speak my mind.

this concept of being ashame to talk about singers a lot of people like, but that I don't, is foreign to me. in fact, I never even knew there was a name for it till now.
to answer the question, though, I've never been a fan of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, or Celine Dion.

If I was ashamed to admit it I wouldn't have written anything on this post.
Just curious why so many people don't care for michael Jackson.

I admit I came up with the term guilty displeasure. I guess if a particular artist was very popular and very well-loved by a majority of people, you feel as if you were to express that their music just didn't do a thing for you, you'd come off as being a troll or an asshole, when the truth is that I'm more into rock than pop, plus I'm just a musical square peg anyhow so most of what I like is shit nobody gives a damn about in the first place. LOL!

Think for example of the idea of the musical guilty pleasure. That seems to be a common thing. Apparently there are bands or artists that for unknown but arbitrary reasons one is not supposed to openly admit they like them. It's probably as silly and irrational as the idea of the guilty displeasure, isn't it? Welcome to earth. LOL!

to answer Ryan's question about not liking Michael Jackson, I think this is one aspect Chris was referring to. why, when I or others express not enjoying someone that the masses love, do people question why we feel as we do? I mean, seriously, why can't it just be left at that?
I don't like Michael Jackson's style of singing, and that's satisfactory enough for me. on the same token, I'm sure I like plenty of singers others can't stand, or wouldn't even bother listening to. if we all liked the same types of music, it'd sure be a boring world.
also, like Chris, I tend to gravitate towards artists no one has ever heard of. and, those people tend to be my absolute favorites.
I'm proud of the fact I don't love what society dictates I should; it's one thing that sets me apart as an individual.

I agree with Chelsea, and if you say you're not into Frank Zappa or the Beatles, I'll leave it at that, unless you want to be exceedingly nasty about it, which some people can be.

If someone expresses their love for a particular singer, book/author, TV show, movie, or whatever, I have no problem telling them I don't have the same taste, but I do try not to be nasty about it. I don't think it's ever necessary to put someone down and make them feel bad or get defensive just because you don't like what they like.

Oh, I know, but fandom will make some people do some mighty interesting things in defense of their object of fandom. LOL!
